PROFESSION: Patient Account Rep I DATES: Start ASAP MIN REQS: 2-5 years of medical billing experience; must be bilingual (Spanish); prior Meditech and Star experience preferred;
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
The Patient Accounting Representative I provides customer service and clerical account support for the department, including reception, responding to initial patient inquiries, mail handling, sort and distribution.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:
A. Technical Skills: 1. Receives and directs the public in person or by telephone in a professional and courteous manner. 2. Answers patient inquiries or directs inquiries to the appropriate representative. 3. Enters appropriate documentation of all account activity through system notes or account revision. 4. Works patient statements and claims through the statement and follow-up processes. 5. Sorts, distributes and files account documentation in accordance with department guidelines. 6. Sorts and matches hard claim copies with supporting documentation, distributing to the directed work stations. 7. Sort and distributes mail and reports. 8. Ensures timely mailing of all patient statements and insurance claims. 9. Tracks, maintains and orders office supplies and minor equipment, confirming that subsequent invoices are correct. Coordinates with outside repair services and plant services as necessary. 10. Maintains and organizes check copies. 11. Keeps a master list of files stored at outside facilities. 12. Gives clerical support to the management and supervisory staff.
B. Department methods and procedures: 13. Follows the Facility’s General Policy and Procedures, the Department Policy’s and Procedures and the Emergency Preparedness Procedures. 14. Meets Productivity standards, targets, error ratios and reporting requirements as assigned by the department Manager or Supervisor. 15. Participates in regularly scheduled meetings, as well as any training seminars as assigned by the department Manager or Supervisor. 16. Is cross-trained and fills in for other staff as assigned. 17. Follows the department rules and guidelines for lunch, breaks, requesting time-off and shift assignments. 18. Operates office equipment and machinery and utilizes ergonomic workstations, equipment and supplies. 19. Follows all JCAHO and outside regulatory agency’s mandated rules and procedures.
C. Computer Hardware and Software Applications: 20. Utilizes the assigned menus and pathways in the hospital mainframe system. Reports software application problems to the appropriate supervisor. 21. Utilizes assigned menus and pathways in foreign software applications. Reports software application problems to the appropriate supervisor. 22. Utilizes assigned computer hardware. Reports any hardware or equipment problems to the appropriate supervisor. 23. Participates in the of testing for assigned software applications, including verification of field integrity.
D. Department and Public Relations: 24. Communicates in a professional manner with the general public, patients, their families, physicians and third party payors. 25. Interacts in a professional manner with clinical staff, coworkers and management. 26. Assures patient privacy and confidentiality as appropriate or required. Ensures minors have a parent or guardian listed as guarantor as appropriate. 27. Assists with special projects as assigned. 28. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• High School Diploma or four years equivalent work experience • Ability to Alphabetize • Ability to perform mathematical calculations • Keyboard by touch
